What is A Veneer?

A veneer is a thin custom shell — porcelain or composite resin — bonded to the front of a tooth to change its shape, length, or color. It's not a cap or a crown: your natural tooth stays underneath, and the shell does the cosmetic work.

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are milled or hand-layered in a dental lab from thin ceramic, then bonded to the tooth over two visits — one to prepare the tooth and take an impression, one to bond the finished shell. They typically last longer and resist staining more than composite, at a higher cost and with slightly more preparation of the natural tooth.

Composite veneers

Composite veneers are sculpted directly onto the tooth from a tooth-colored resin, then shaped and polished chairside, usually in a single visit. They cost less than porcelain and require less removal of the natural tooth, but typically don't last as long and are more prone to staining over time.

Am I a candidate for veneers?

Most people are — but veneers work best for specific goals. Here's a quick way to check.

Veneers are usually a good fit if you have:

  • Chipped, worn, or uneven teeth
  • Permanent staining that whitening hasn't fixed
  • Small gaps or minor spacing issues
  • Teeth that are slightly small or irregularly shaped
  • Healthy gums and enough enamel for bonding

You may need something else first if you have:

  • Active gum disease or untreated decay
  • Significant misalignment that needs orthodontics
  • A habit of teeth grinding that isn't managed with a nightguard
  • Very little remaining enamel on the affected teeth

Not sure which applies to you? Dr. Gollob can tell you in a few minutes at your free consult.

Common questions

Does it hurt?+

Enamel has no nerve endings, so preparation is usually painless. Local anesthetic is used if any reduction is needed near the gumline or patient request it.

How many teeth do most people do?+

Most people veneer the six to ten teeth visible when they smile. Others want the entire upper or lower - or both arches redone. We'll show you the mockup either way before deciding.

What if I don't like the shade?+

Veneers are placed dry and shown to you before permanent bonding. Any changes to shades can still happen at this stage to get you the perfect shade!

What do veneers cost, and is financing available?+

Cost varies on types of veneers you would like, how many teeth you are looking to fix. A plan and cost unique to your smile would be given at your consultation. Financing plans are available if you'd rather spread out the cost.
